My "Chalet Experience"
By Vivian Robertshaw
"I stumbled upon The Chalet Experience by chance - via a single traveler's chat room; within 30 minutes of my email they had sent answers to my questions, and then followed it up with a phone call. I spoke to Phil, who had a cheerful, enthusiastic yet 'non-heavy-sell' approach. After speaking to Phil, I read many of the lovely comments on the web site from other guests and feeling daring I made my booking.
I flew to Geneva from Southampton with Flybe airways on the 08.30 Sunday flight, arriving in Geneva at 11.40 to be greeted by Phil and a couple of other chalet guests. The drive to Chalet Forestiere took about an hour, on arrival I was offered tea and homemade cake - wonderful. But the best feeling of all was that of having left home at 7am and mountain skiing by 2pm. This was because I had been collected from the airport, my lift-pass had been purchased in advance and my wonderful (you will read that often because they were) hosts fixed me up with skis and poles as soon as I arrived (also, here a travel tip - most people changeover on Saturday, so no queuing to hire skis on the Sunday).
Exhausted, but at the same time refreshed, I enjoyed a late afternoon vin chaude whilst staring dreamily at Mont Blanc, in the distance it soaked up the warm sunshine.
The chalet was very clean and warm with a log-fire, it had obviously undergone a recent refit - my en-suite bathroom was all shiny and new and supplied unlimited hot water for my three baths per day! I had a nice view across some roofs to the mountain opposite, a sunny balcony and a very comfortable bed.
In the evenings we were offered beers and wines etc and served an excellent four course meal. The cuisine was really top quality and varied, freshly cooked as we guests drank our aperitifs and talked, read or played one of the board games provided in the comfortable lounge. The other people in the chalet were a group of three female anesthetists, a married couple who were both lawyers and a solo Royal Navy guy. So we had really pleasant and interesting conversation over supper.
I had decided to take a week of morning lessons with Ecole du ski Francais (ESF) for two reasons - one, to try and move up from my intermediate plateau and two, to have more people to ski with. So after a good breakfast with plenty of choice, it was off to ski-school at 10 a.m. (a five minute walk from the chalet). Our French instructor, Jean-Claude, was funny, friendly and fluent in English, he took us off-piste and down red, then black mogul runs and all sorts of stuff I'd never skied before, he gave me and the others the confidence and encouragement to push ourselves.
On the last day he took us to a secret ski-hut where we met all the other hundred or so ESF students for cheese and local wine - a really nice touch. The skiing was spectacular and the pistes un crowded - I only had to queue for the chair-lifts twice, otherwise I'd jump straight on, no waiting around.
The little hamlet town of Les Gets nestles deep in a valley, just one hour from Geneva, and has a gentle ambience and friendly, helpful local people. There were many little bistro restaurants to eat in, when Phil and Jim took their day off, plus several bars - we even went ten-pin bowling. Thankfully, no loud-mouthed English yobs I'd seen in other ski resorts.
All in all I had a whole six and a half glorious days skiing in superb sunshine, in a ski area with outstanding scenery. The whole experience was simply perfect. My online foray didn't disappoint, as Phil and Jim were the perfect hosts - warm and friendly guys who made me feel very welcome; pretty important for a lone, forty-something female. And I'm definitely off my plateau! "
